Be a Volunteer
Since the beginning, volunteers have been a vital part of the Benzie Area Historical Museum. They provide services to our visitors, assist in the office, and help with many forms of record keeping and research. Volunteers also serve on committees and the board of directors.
Volunteering is a great way to meet new people, learn about the Benzie area and support the museum. Do you have a few hours a week or month to volunteer at the museum? If so, contact us at 231-882-5539 or bmuseum@att.net and let us know about you and your interests.
Endowment Fund Planned Giving Program
Consider giving a gift to the Benzie Area Historical Society. The Benzie Area Historical Society has established, by resolution, an Endowment Fund for the long-term benefit of the Museum. The Fund is managed by an independent Committee (appointed by the directors of the Museum) working under the rules established in the founding resolution.
The short as well as the long-term goal is to build a fund large enough so that it will provide earnings to help support the collection, preservation and interpretation of the artifacts pertaining to the history of Benzie County and the surrounding area. Eventually we would like to see the fund grow in size so that the operation of the Museum (staff, heat, light, maintenance, etc.) could be funded by the earnings of the Endowment Fund leaving extra fund raising to provide monies for special projects.
Your cash gifts both large and small will be prudently invested to maximize returns.
Some Charitable Giving Methods
with Tax Advantages
- A gift of money results in a charitable deduction for federal Income Tax Gift Tax and Estate Tax.
- Appreciated Assets. These commonly include real estate and shares of corporations, limited liability companies and the like. The donor receives a tax deduction equal to the fair market value on the date of gift or bequest. The donor does not pay tax on the appreciation in the value.
- Gift of Life Insurance Policy. The gift is equal to the interpolated terminal reserve value computed as the date of the gift (think of cash value).
- Premium Payments. Payment of a premium of some life insurance policies.
- IRA Beneficiary. The income tax on IRA distributions can be avoided by naming a charity as beneficiary.
- Gifts to Museums. Some gifts of antiques, collectibles, paintings, etc., can be made for which the donor receives a tax deduction based on the current value of the object.
- Gift of Remainder Interest. A donor can contribute the remainder interest in a personal residence or a farm. This can include a joint life interest of the donor and spouse.
- Charitable Remainder Interest. Property can be placed in trust for one or more lives or for up to 20 years. The remainder of the trust passes to the charity.
The charitable remainder trust is tax exempt. Accordingly it is possible to place appreciated assets in the trust. The trust sells the assets without paying tax and the capital gain may or may not be taxed to the donor, depending upon a number of factors.
- Charitable Lead Trust. A charitable lead trust is just the reverse of a charitable remainder trust. A gift is made (usually by will at death) of property in trust under the terms of which the charity is paid an income-like interest for a term, with the remainder after that income interest passing to the donor family.
Please help with this long-term funding program by including the Museum in your estate plans and longer term charitable objectives. Please call if you have questions.
